Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis), is a deciduous, understory tree. It has a round crown and grows to be about 20-30 ft. tall. It’s canopy spread is slightly larger than that. It blooms beautiful pink flowers in early spring (March-April), before its leaves grow.
Songbirds eat the flower buds and the seeds. Caterpillars and other insects eat the flower buds, too, and in turn birds eat the insects.
Redbuds require little maintenance. Prune back dead limbs to the branch collar.
