Hazelnut (Corylus americana) is a deciduous multi-stem shrub that grows to be about 10-15 ft. tall. It can be grown in a range of soils, but best likes ground that stays a little bit wet, or among other tree growth.
It’s often planted along yard perimeters as a kind of hedge. I grow it a few feet from our fence line, among other flowers. It also has male and female parts on the same plant. They require very little maintenance.
Height range: 10-15 feet
Spread range: 8-13 feet
Bloom Time and Color: March-April; (males – brown and females – red)
Ideal soil type: Tolerates a range of soils, including clay soil
Sun Requirements: Full sun to part shade
Wildlife Benefits: Wildlife will eat the nuts, also edible for humans
