Downy Serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea) is a deciduous large shrub/small tree that can grow in many soil types and will tolerate clay, as long as the soil is well drained. It can be grown as a single stem tree or as a multi-stem bush (I grow mine as bushes). Just let the 5-10 suckers grow out to form a bush around the first stem.
It produces small fruit around Years 5-6, around May. They are delicious and similar in taste to blueberries. They can be eaten right off the tree or used to make fruit jams and pies. Birds also love the berries, in Missouri you’ll see them attracting Robins and Bluejays.
Maintenance: It requires little maintenance. There are no serious problems associated with the tree. Prune off dead or broken limbs and let another sucker form at the bottom to take its place.
