River Birch (Betula nigra) is a fast-growing deciduous tree that grows to be about 40-70 ft.; growing to be a shorter height with less sunlight. It likes wetter soils, and will even put up with some standing water. It can be grown with many off-shooting stems at a lower height, creating a distinguishing look from other trees with one straight trunk.
Betula nigra is one of the most heat-tolerant and disease free of the birches. It tolerates urban pollution and is often grown around St. Louis City.
Maintenance: The bark naturally peels off (exfoliates) and is not a problem. Prune during December-February and avoid pruning in the spring when the sap is running. Prune only when necessary.
